Students from Xiangtan Institute of Technology Visit the University of Macau for "Artificial Intelligence and Big Data" Study Tour

XIT 2024/07/28 Readings:261

From July 14 to 21, a delegation of 11 teachers and students from Xiangtan Institute of Technology participated in a summer study program on "Artificial Intelligence and Big Data" at the University of Macau.

The program aimed to develop the participants' innovative and problem-solving skills in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data through systematic coursework, practical project research, and cross-cultural exchanges.

Three students, Tian Jing, Wang Jiayi, and Lu Chenyang, were awarded the title of "Outstanding Participants." All members of the delegation received recommendation letters and program completion certificates from the University of Macau.

### Modular Learning: Exploring the Wonders of Artificial Intelligence

The University of Macau arranged four specialized skill courses for the study program: "The Mysteries of AI," "The Integration of AI and Big Data," "Swarm Intelligence and System Support," and "Applications of Fintech and Blockchain Technology in AI." Professors and industry experts delivered these courses entirely in English using case-based teaching methods.

In the classroom, senior lecturer Mr. Miguel and others used vivid, real-world examples to engage the students in open discussions. Participants explored how big data technologies optimize AI model construction and how AI can be applied to real-world scenarios and forecasting. They also discussed the challenges and difficulties facing the AI and big data industries.

Wen Chuangxin, vice dean of the School of Digital Technology at Xiangtan Institute of Technology and the team’s leading instructor, commented that the "Artificial Intelligence and Big Data" program at the University of Macau emphasized the integration of theory and practice. Students not only learned theoretical knowledge in the classroom but also applied this knowledge to solve practical problems through project research and data analysis.

"This hands-on learning approach greatly enhances students' practical skills and problem-solving abilities. It will provide valuable insights for the educational reform of the School of Digital Technology at Xiangtan Institute of Technology," he said.

At the opening ceremony, the University of Macau and Xiangtan Institute of Technology exchanged gifts, expressing their intention to deepen their cooperative friendship and work together to create new educational achievements.

### Experiential Exchange: Experiencing the Charm of Science and Education

In addition to hands-on and theoretical learning, the delegation visited the University of Macau's residential college system. The university has 10 residential colleges where students from different grades, majors, and backgrounds live and learn together, integrating general and professional education to create a comprehensive and holistic learning experience.

The students from Xiangtan Institute of Technology gained a deeper understanding of the cultural significance of the residential college system and experienced how it fosters interdisciplinary thinking, teamwork, and self-motivation.

The delegation also visited the University of Macau's State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City, where they learned about the application of IoT and AI in smart cities, explored the latest technological trends, and enhanced their practical knowledge.

The lab focuses on three main areas—urban energy, urban transportation, and urban safety and disaster prevention—using IoT technologies. Its goal is to address key scientific and technological challenges in the smart city IoT field, developing foundational and universal theories, algorithms, and systems for smart city applications.

During the visit, the lab's director showcased various innovative projects, including a smart city IoT system, disaster prevention and mitigation alert systems, and a power system with a high proportion of distributed renewable energy.

During their visit, students and faculty also toured the Macao Communications Museum, Macao Science Center, and Macao Grand Prix Museum. These visits enriched their understanding of the spirit of Chinese scientists and the history of technological innovation while allowing them to experience the charm of AI technology firsthand and broaden their global perspectives.

Instructor Hu Zhou remarked, "Through this study tour, I have experienced the latest research outcomes and technological applications in the field of AI and witnessed the strong power of teamwork. I am pleased to see the students grow and improve through practical experiences."

"The changes in the students are evident—they have become more confident, team-oriented, and innovative, while also broadening their global perspectives. I believe this valuable experience in Macau will positively impact their future careers."

### Project Presentations and Outstanding Results

On the morning of July 19, the project presentation session was held in Room E041051 of the Lui Che Woo Building at the University of Macau. The presentations covered a variety of topics.

The visiting team from Xiangtan Institute of Technology was joined by undergraduate and graduate students from other universities, including Tsinghua University, Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications, and Changzhou Institute of Technology. The participants were divided into six teams to present their projects.

Tian Jing from Xiangtan Institute of Technology’s School of Digital Technology represented Group 5 with a project titled *Computer Science and Database Systems*, delivering a presentation in English. "An all-English presentation requires strong information organization and communication skills. The content must be logically sound and easy to understand, while also ensuring accuracy and fluency in the language," she said. After multiple rehearsals and revisions, she achieved the best presentation outcome.

Wang Jiayi and Lu Chenyang presented a project titled *Design and Analysis of the Big Data Backend in Everyday Life*, using case studies from Taobao’s data mining and data cleaning processes. Their work was highly recognized by the judges. "Through teamwork, we learned how to communicate effectively, divide tasks, and collaborate to solve problems," said Wang Jiayi.

AI expert Mr. Miguel GOMES DA COSTA Junior praised the students from Xiangtan Institute of Technology for their outstanding performance. He encouraged them to continue innovating and challenging themselves in their future studies and careers, striving to "become the best version of themselves."
