On the afternoon of June 7th, Professor Chen Jianchu, a professor, doctoral supervisor, and academic leader at the School of Literature of Hunan Normal University, and former dean of the Graduate School of Hunan Normal University, gave a lecture to students at the School of Humanities and Arts on the theme of "The Analects and Confucianism - The Theory of 'Gentlemen'" in the Three Teachings Lecture Hall, in order to improve students' literary and theoretical literacy.

In the lecture, Professor Chen started from the introduction of Confucius and The Analects of Confucius, explained the meaning of "Confucianism", "Confucianism" and "Confucianism", and briefly described the basic spirit of Confucianism and its essence, as well as the main classics and representatives of Confucianism. This leads to the origin of the "gentleman" theory.

Professor Chen used popular folk sayings such as "the friendship between gentlemen is as light as water" and "the beauty of a gentleman's success" to describe the image of a "gentleman" in people's minds today, which is "benevolent, righteous, elegant, and humble". By listing the frequency of the use of the word "gentleman" in the Analects, the importance of "gentleman" is reflected.

In addition, Professor Chen also cited a large number of classic quotes to elaborate on the image characteristics of the "gentleman" in the Analects of Confucius, such as "the gentleman is knowledgeable, benevolent, righteous, cultured, and courteous, facing difficulties, harmonious but different, and cautious in speaking and acting." This demonstrates the Confucian worship of the beautiful character of the "gentleman" and the rich and systematic "gentleman view" in the Confucian ideological system.

Finally, Professor Chen summarized the image of a "gentleman" with the main characteristics of "being eager to learn and strict in cultivation, practicing benevolence and righteousness, being moderate and cautious, and being respectful, loyal, and brave". He explained that the image of a "gentleman" in the eyes of Confucianism has remained unchanged for thousands of years and is almost perfect. He stated that the Confucian culture of "gentlemen" has practical significance, and modern Chinese society still needs to call for "gentlemen".

The culture of gentlemen continues our national bloodline and spiritual atmosphere, and needs to be passed down and guarded from generation to generation; Need to keep up with the times and be brave in innovation; We need to base ourselves on new practices and inject new era connotations; Promote the creative transformation and innovative development of Chinese civilization, and activate its new vitality.

This lecture has greatly benefited the teachers and students present. They all expressed that by listening to Professor Chen's explanation, they not only have a deeper understanding of Confucius' meaning of "gentleman", but also have a more comprehensive understanding of how to correct the value orientation of being a person and shape a noble gentleman's personality.
